We wish the Cavalier community a meaningful #Juneteenth as we reflect on our shared history and celebrate freedom, resilience, and equality.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

One of the driving forces behind establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday was Opal Lee. A retired educator, Lee made a symbolic walk from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., in 2021 as part of her lifelong advocacy for federal recognition of Juneteenth.

To learn more about Juneteenth and its significance, visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture at nmaahc.si.edu/Juneteenth. You can also learn more about Opal Lee and her advocacy at nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/who-opal-lee.
