We wish the Cavalier community a meaningful #Juneteenth as we reflect on our shared history and celebrate freedom, resilience, and equality.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

One of the driving forces behind establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday was Opal Lee. A retired educator, Lee made a symbolic walk from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., in 2021 as part of her lifelong advocacy for federal recognition of Juneteenth.

To learn more about Juneteenth and its significance, visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture at nmaahc.si.edu/Juneteenth. You can also learn more about Opal Lee and her advocacy at nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/who-opal-lee.

Graphic celebrating Juneteenth with a decorative red, gold, and green border inspired by African patterns. In the center, three overlapping handprints in red, gold, and green form a heart shape in the palm area. Below the handprints, large distressed lettering spells “JUNE TEENTH” in red, gold, and green. Underneath, the message reads, “Honoring Freedom, History, and Progress.” The Carrollton Public Schools logo appears at the bottom center. The design uses Pan-African colors to symbolize heritage, unity, and celebration.
